Smoking Weed ≠ Smoking Cigarettes: A Harvard Study Backed This

For years, people have debated “is weed bad for your lungs the same way tobacco is?”. A new study has brought us more insight on this discussion as Harvard researchers released data that will change the way we look at smoking cannabis and it’s potential lung & heart health risks, if any.

The Study: Marijuana vs Tobacco

Researchers at Harvard Medical School analyzed chest CT scans of nearly 300 people. Here’s how the group broke down:

  • 89 were non-smokers
  • 97 smoked tobacco
  • 99 smoked marijuana

What did they find? Tobacco smokers showed more heart and lung damage than cannabis smokers. Damage such as moderate to severe coronary artery calcification and emphysema. But cannabis smokers? There are no real signs of emphysema or lung over-inflation.

One of the study’s main takeaways noted:

“In general, marijuana users do not appear to develop emphysema or pulmonary hyperinflation.”

Science Backs It Up (Again)

This isn’t just a one-off. There’ve been several other studies that back up the idea that tobacco and cannabis smoke aren’t equal when it comes to health risks. Unlike tobacco, cannabis smoke hasn’t been linked to:

  • Lung cancer
  • COPD
  • Emphysema
  • Other major tobacco-related diseases

And if you’re using vaporizers instead of joints or pipes, that’s even better. Vaporizing weed (especially flower) heats it up without burning it, so you avoid a lot of the harmful toxins that come from combustion. Clinical trials have even called vaporizers “safe and effective” as a way to consume cannabis.

So Why Is Weed Still Treated Like a Bigger Deal?

That’s the question Paul Armentano, Deputy Director of NORML, is asking too. In response to the study, he pointed out the frustrating truth:

“Tobacco is federally legal and kills hundreds of thousands of people each year. Cannabis? Still classified as a Schedule I drug like heroin. It makes no sense.”

He’s right. The science is stacking up—and it’s saying that cannabis doesn’t belong in the same danger category as tobacco. Yet, laws continue to treat it like a major public threat.

The Bottom Line

If you’re someone who enjoys cannabis, this study should bring you insight on cannabis and how it’s correlated to heart and lung health. While nothing you smoke is ever 100% risk-free, the evidence keeps showing that weed is nowhere near as harmful to your lungs or heart as tobacco. And with more people switching to vapes or edibles, the risk drops even more.

Let’s hope policymakers catch up with science sooner rather than later.
